A Martial Art, Combat Sport, and a Self-Defense System that focuses on Grappling and Ground Fighting
Relson GracieJiu-Jitsu is a martial art, combat sport, and a self defense system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. The art was derived from the Japanese martial art of Kano Kodokan judo in the early 20th century.
It teaches that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using leverage and proper technique – most notably by applying joint-locks and chokeholds – to defeat the other person. Jiu Jitsu training can be used for sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition or self defense. Sparring (commonly referred to as ‘rolling’) and live drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance, especially in competition. While sparring at ones physical level is important to a students growth, it is the emphasis on reality based self defense that is essential in relation to the students progress and ascension through the grades/belts.
At Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy (Helio gracie/Relson Gracie Training Center), Tyler, Tx our primary objective is to preserve the legacy of 10th Degree Red Belt Grand Master Helio Gracie/ 9th Degree Red Belt- Grand Master Relson Gracie by making the invaluable benefits
Jiu-Jitsu available to the greatest number of people, regardless or age, gender or athletic ability.
Our teaching philosophy is to teach Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu first and foremost as a system of self-defense, with the objective of giving the student the ability to stay safe and prevail during a real and violent street fight confrontation. We still enjoy the sporting aspects that most Brazilian jiu-Jitsu schools exclusively focus on But, first and foremost we beleive in providing our students with the best tools, techniques, tactics, and strategies to prevail when violence comes their way. We practice the sporting aspects of jiujitsu as a secondary goal.
We believe as the head of our system, 9th Degree Red Belt Grand Master Relson Gracie and his father the co-founder of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu 10th Degree Red belt, Grand Master Helio Gracie that when a student should be able defend themselves against a larger, stronger, more athletic attacker in a ‘real’ street fight situation, that that student will know the core basic core techniques of Gracie Self Defense. While our youth, adult, and senior students continue to advance in ranks until they become black belts, and thereafter, they will l all continue to learn our reality based self defense. Besides being versed and ready to deal with violent opponents in the streets the students self defense will become second nature to them. We train our students to be street ready, and ready for life.
How we practice: We practice techniques in a co-operative manner. If a student can not do the technique slow with a co-opertive partner in practice, then he or she will not be able to do the technique fast, or successfully against a resisting opponent or assailant.
The students who are interested in the sportive aspects can also train with us in our competition classes. They can also take our Judo, and Wrestling and Muay Thai Kick Boxing, and Boxing classes. This helps them to be able to deal with opponents who attempt to use techniques from other systems. Get in and train in the best reality based self defense.
We have been instructing in Relson Gracie and other great martial arts disciplines since 2003. The academy is owned and operated by a U.S. Marine/U.S. Army (Infantry Veteran)/Deputy U.S. Marshal (Retired Federal Law Enforcement Officer).See Schedule
